FLORALS

Design Research

2009-2011

Florals is a series of working prototypes that investigate behaviors of component-based soft structures. Digitally cut from wool felt, ripstop nylon, and cast from urethane rubber in CNC-machined formwork, the prototypes are both full-scale mock-ups of curtain/wall hybrids and constitute a non-scale-specific method for iterative form-finding. The interest in floral motifs in the series is linked to the desire to blur the distinction between the geometric patterns that determine the three-dimensional form of individual components and the graphic patterns that are typically applied to decorative textile surfaces
